| Men's Rites of Passage (MROP) Program People's Community Baptist Church 31 Norwood Road Silver Spring, Maryland 20905 This program is a three-year program for young men ages 12-17. It is sponsored by the Men's Fellowship of People's Community Baptist Church. The program is instrumental in instilling financial and responsibility, personal health, spiritual growth, academic achievement and other notable characteristics in the young men. Each young man must commit to the three-year journey which ends with an "initiation" into manhood and includes an opportunity to travel to South Africa. MROP relies on donations, church sponsorship and fundraisers as parents are only asked to make nominal donations, such as lunch money for day trips. Tresa's son, Angelo is a 2016 graduate of the program and traveled to Johannesburg and Cape Town in July. We will be forever indebted to the Mentors for their gifts of time and talent to the young men they serve.
Girl’s Rites of Passage Program People’s Community Baptist Church 31 Norwood Road Silver Spring, Maryland 20905 This is a one-year program for young women. It is sponsored by the National Council of Negro Women, Potomac Valley Chapter of Maryland. The program is instrumental in instructing young women on issues such as personal health, etiquette, financial responsibility, social media etiquette, spiritual growth and academic achievement. The young ladies participate in an end-of year ceremony or initiation, crossing over to womanhood. They are surrounded and nurtured by the “elders of the village” as they walk through their journeys. Tresa’s daughters, Sydney and Ashley are graduates of this program. We are very thankful Mentors for the gifts of time and talent to the young women they serve.
